Deep cleaning, also known as scaling and root planing, is a non-surgical treatment for gum disease. Unlike regular cleaning that focuses on the tooth surface, deep cleaning targets the areas below the gumline where plaque and tartar have built up.

What is Deep Cleaning?

Deep cleaning is a special dental treatment for people with early gum disease (gingivitis or periodontitis). Unlike a regular cleaning that only removes plaque above the gums, deep cleaning goes below the gumline to clean where a toothbrush can't reach.

The procedure has two parts:

  • Scaling: Removes tartar and bacteria from deep gum pockets
  • Root planing: Smooths the tooth roots to help gums heal and reattach to teeth

Think of it as giving your gums a fresh start. It helps stop bleeding, reduces inflammation, and prevents teeth from becoming loose.

  • Stops Gum Disease

Deep cleaning removes bacteria deep below the gumline, stopping gum disease from getting worse and protecting your oral health.

  • Prevents Tooth Loss

By cleaning out infected pockets and smoothing tooth roots, it helps gums reattach and keeps your natural teeth firmly in place.

  • Freshens Breath

Removing trapped food, plaque, and tartar eliminates the bacteria that cause persistent bad breath.

  • Protects Overall Health

Treating gum infection reduces inflammation linked to serious conditions like heart disease and diabetes, benefiting your whole body.

  • Gum Inflammation

If your gums bleed easily when brushing or flossing, it's often a sign of infection below the gumline that requires deep cleaning.

  • Deep Gum Pockets

When your dentist measures gum pockets deeper than 4mm, bacteria have likely accumulated in areas that regular cleaning can no longer reach.

  • Tartar Buildup Below Gums

Visible tartar above the gums is one thing, but hard deposits hiding underneath require deep cleaning to remove and prevent bone loss.

  • Loose Teeth or Receding Gums

Teeth that feel loose or gums that are pulling away from teeth indicate progressing gum disease—deep cleaning helps stop further damage.
